Shoreline walks for people who stop to look at birds.
We publish coastal trail notes and lead small walks along estuaries, dunes and tidal flats. Every walk is timed to the tide and the season, because that's what decides what you'll see.
Ask about walk datesThree walks
| Walk | Distance | Time | Best tide |
|---|---|---|---|
| Estuary loop | 4 km | 2 hours | Falling |
| Dune ridge and lagoon | 7 km | 3.5 hours | Any |
| Tidal flats at dawn | 3 km | 2 hours | Low only |
Groups are kept to eight. The pace is slow and the ground is flat but often wet, so waterproof boots matter more than fitness.
What you're likely to see
Spring
Sanderling, dunlin and whimbrel moving north in loose flocks.
Summer
Terns fishing the channels, oystercatchers and ringed plovers on the shingle.
Autumn
Sandpipers, godwits and knots feeding hard on the way south.
Winter
Curlew, turnstone and brent geese, with the flats to yourself.
What to bring
Binoculars if you have them (we carry two spare pairs), waterproof boots, a windproof layer and a flask. We bring the scope and the field guides.
